Prerequisites required
Advanced Piloting Prerequisite: Piloting Course Advanced coastal navigation principals will enable you to know where you are at all times. Your boat’s position can be determined by using landmarks and aids to navigation – allowing for current and leeway, tides and tidal currents. Some areas reviewed: steering and timing a course; additional chart familiarization; tides and tidal currents; electronic navigational aids and the sextant. Celestial Navigation Prerequisite: Advanced Piloting This course, introduced in 2000, combines the original works of Junior Navigator and Navigator, and applies the sciences of cartography and astronomy to set a course and determine a position at sea. Some areas reviewed: use of the sextant; Electronic Navigation; the Nautical Almanac; sight reduction by formula and scientific calculator; the Pilot and Great Circle Charts, and much, much more. Elective - Available to the boating public Ad Hoc Skipper Ad Hoc Skipper is intended to prepare crew and guests to take control of the boat, in the event that the operator is incapacitated. Be ready for on-the-water emergencies by learning the rudiments of chart reading, boat handling, first aid and how to signal for help. BoatWise BoatWise is designed for children ages 8 – 12. It will prepare them for on-the-water emergencies by teaching basic safe boating skills, rules of the road, weather warnings and how to call for help with the VHF radio. Youngsters will learn: how to recognize various boats; nautical terms; the importance of lifejackets, PFD’s and other safety equipment; how to be safe around boats, but not to be a boat operator. Marine Electronics If you want to be better informed, and take advantage of modern electronic devices for navigation and safety afloat, this course is for you. Electronics such as the depth sounder, RADAR, LORAN-C, satellite systems and auxiliary equipment are explored, and can be taken as separate seminars. Offshore Sailing This fascinating course focuses on the unique aspects of sailing offshore, and the challenges of a prudent sailor and the boat, will need to be prepared to meet. Some areas reviewed: passage planning and the voyage; oceanography and the weather; checklists and repair kits, and Maritimes Mobile Nets. Seamanship Sail An introductory course that teaches some basic sailing techniques for safe operation under various conditions, and will encourage the participant to become a more competent sailor. Some areas reviewed: spars and rigging; sails and theory of sail action; sailboat handling and cruising under sail (day sailing and keelboats). Weather Some areas reviewed: pressure; wind; temperature and moisture; air masses; frontal weather; clouds; precipitation and fog; wave theory, and forecasting the weather. |
